CASTINE – Katherine Weaver Ebbert Marshall, 84, passed away Jan. 25, 2005, at her home. She was born Nov. 6, 1920, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Ralph Barndollar Ebbert and Helen Elizabeth Williams Ebbert. Earlier Katherine had recovered from cancer surgery and radiation treatment in the late 1960s while living in Mexico City, Mexico. She went on to live a vigorous, active life in support of her family and community related activities. Katherine is a graduate of Wellesley College, Class of 1942. She married Lt. Cmdr. George M. Marshall Jr., USMS, on June 21, 1944, at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City. She moved to Castine from New Canaan, Conn. with her husband in 1976 and became active as a member of many organizations. These included a former Maine Maritime Women’s Club including service as president; P.E.O Sisterhood, Chapter B of Bangor; D.A.R. Frances Dighton Williams Chapter of Bangor; Dr. Mary Cushman Circle of Castine; Trinitarian Congregational Parish of Castine and various quilting groups. Katherine enjoyed quilting and participating in numerous craft fairs in Maine over a long period of time. Katherine is a descendant of Thomas Burnham one of three brothers who, in the charge of their uncle, Captain Robert Andrews, arrived in 1635 off Pemaquid Point, on the Bark “Angel Gabriel” at the time of the “Great Migration”. This ship was wrecked in a great storm in August of 1635 while off Pemaquid Point. Thomas Burnham married Mary Lawrence in 1645. Their son Thomas, one of 11 children, was born in 1728 in Ipswich, Mass. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Captain George Milroy Marshall; a son, James Wainwright Marshall of Sonoma, Calif.; a daughter, Katherine Marshall Greenman of Old Town; a granddaughter, Margaret Greenman Burman of Minneapolis, Minn.; a grandson, Gregory James Burnham Greenman of Bangor; and a sister, Helen Ebbert Sturley of San Diego, Calif. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. June 21, 2005, at the Trinitarian Congregational Parish of Castine, 68 Main St. In lieu of flowers and other expressions of sympathy, her family invites those who wish to do so, to make donations in her memory to Dr. Mary Cushman Circle, care of Trinitarian Congregational Parish of Castine, P.O.
