BAR HARBOR – Katheryn H. Stewart, 79, was set free from her suffering, Sept. 26, 2006, at the Sonogee Rehabilitation and Living Center. Born Aug. 14, 1927, she was the fourth child of Lottie West Hutchins and Roy G. Hutchins of Milbridge. As a child and throughout her life, she was affectionately known as “Nupie,” by her close friends and family. Upon graduating from Milbridge High School in 1945, she worked for three years with New England Telephone Co. before enlisting with the Women’s Army Corp. There she served first as an Army recruiter at Fort Meade, Md., and then as an Army Strength Analyst with the 98th M.R.U., Heidleburg, Germany. There she met Staff Sgt. Morgan F. Stewart, whom she married upon returning to Washington, D.C., Aug. 2, 1953. Their only child, Nola Katheryn was born there at Walter Reed Army Hospital. The family lived in the Hudson Valley area of New York for many years where Morgan worked for IBM. She returned to Milbridge in 1972 and served the town as tax collector, member of the board of selectmen and interim town manager. She was a founder of the Milbridge Historical Society. In 1978, she attended the Eleanor Roberts School of Electrology and in 1979, moved to Bar Harbor, where she established her electrology business and met Donald H. Alley, her companion for the last 26 years. For the past 10 years, she wintered in Lake Wales, Fla., and enjoyed every minute taking trips with her Beano friends. She was an accomplished watercolor painter, enjoyed traveling with her daughter, Nola, to study painting and enjoyed painting with her artist friends at Bok Towers, Lake Wales, Fla. She was a descendant of John Alden and belonged to the Mayflower Society. She was also a member of the Congregational Church; the VFW, Ellsworth; the American Legion, Trenton; and the Eastern Star. While in the employ of the state of Maine, she served as a delegate for both the active and retired chapters of the Maine State Employees Association. Through her courage and love for life, she had survived many battles with cancer during the past 20 years. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Nola S. and Kenneth Poole of Buxton; grandsons, Derrick Cote of Westbrook and Jason Cote of Auburn; brother, Milton Hutchins of Bar Harbor; special nephew, Andrew Anderson and family of Machias; niece, Judy Tucker and her mother, Rachael, of Ellsworth; and her companion, Donald H. Alley of Bar Harbor. She was predeceased by her parents, Lottie and Roy Hutchins; her husband, Morgan Stewart; her sister, Helen Anderson; her brother, Willis Hutchins; and her nephew, Roy Hutchins. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Evergreen Cemetery, Milbridge.
