CHERRYFIELD – Kathleen (Merrithew) Harrington Grant passed away in her sleep on Sept. 8, 2004, at the Marshall Healthcare and Rehab Center in Machias. She was born on April 15, 1909, in Canterbury, N.B., Canada, the daughter of Levi and Edith (Estey) Merrithew. She will always be remembered as a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Cherryfield, and for her years of service as a deaconess, president, clerk, director of Bible school, Sunday school teacher, and president of the senior citizens circle for 13 years. She was a graduate of M.C.I. in Pittsfield in 1929. She married Sherman E. Harrington Sr. and they were in the grocery business for 31 years in Cherryfield. She was a past Worthy Matron of Woodbine Chapter No. 141 Order of the Eastern Star and a member for more than 50 years. She was also a member of the Alcyone Chapter of the OES of Milbridge, a past chief of Nokomis Temple No. 21, Pythias Sisters a member for more than 50; years also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post No. 8, of Cherryfield. She is survived by her sons, Sherman E. Harrington Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth, of Lakeland, Fla., Norris L. Harrington and his wife, Violet, of Cherryfield; her grandchildren, Cindy D. Harrington of Gainesville, Fla., Stephen Harrington and his wife, Carolyn, of Machias, Michael L. Harrington of Cherryfield, Scott S. Harrington and his wife, Monica, of Toronto, Ontario, Canada; great-grandchildren, Matthew and Kimberly Harrington of Machias; her sisters, Verna Hanson and her husband, Harry, of Gardner, Mass., Mildred Monahan of Twin Mountains, N.H., and Elizabeth Randall and her husband, Earl, of Pittsfield, many nieces and nephews, stepson, Fred Grant of Cherryfield, and stepdaughter, Maxine Grant Huntley of East Machias. She was predeceased by her parents, her first husband Sherman Harrington Sr.; her second husband, Stanley Grant; her brothers, Clifford, Leonard, and Robert Merrithew; her sisters, Margery Withee, Helen Webber, Stella Chadbourne, and Hazel Merrithew. She often spoke of three special friends who predeceased her, Jennie Tucker, Lucy Tucker, and Marie F. Grant. They were instrumental in organizing the “Senior Circle”. The family wishes to thank her many caregivers for their service over the past several years. The family deeply appreciates the outstanding care Kathleen received from the staff of the Marshall Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Machias. Their devotion, love and professionalism to Mrs. Grant will always be remembered. A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Sept.18, at the First Baptist Church in Cherryfield.
