ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Kenneth Robert Hardy, 67, died Oct. 30, 2006, at Harborview Medical Center, Seattle, after a brief illness. Born March 13, 1939, in Winthrop, son of Dixie and Kenneth Earl Hardy. Ken graduated from Maine Maritime Academy with a bachelor’s of marine science degree and from the University of Southern Maine with a master’s degree in both psychology and management. In 1964 Ken married Cecelia “Ceal” Poulin, who predeceased him Jan. 16, 1997. Starting out his career as a maritime engineer, he later took a position with the State of Maine Social Security Administration, to be closer to his young family. In 1976, Ken and Ceal followed his younger brother, Joe, to Alaska. They lived in Kenai, Alaska, and Barrow, Alaska, before settling in Anchorage, Alaska, in 1979. Ken then joined the State of Alaska Social Security Administration’s Disability Determination Unit, where he was administrator at the time of his retirement. Among Ken’s many interests were hunting, golf and reading. He received many awards over his lifetime, including the Vietnam Service Bar, the Secretary of Defense Award, the Alaskan of the Month Award, and numerous Social Security Administration Commissioner’s Citations. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kenda and Verdon Styles of London; sons, Kenneth J. and Kevin E Hardy, of Anchorage; brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Billie Hardy of Soldotna, Alaska; mother-in-law, Malvina Poulin of Madison; sister-in-law, Jean Gilbert and brother-in-law, Paul Gilbert, of Jay; sister-in-law, Theresa Poulin of Waterville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Ken was predeceased by his wife, Cecelia; and his parents, Kenneth E. and Dixie M. Hardy. He will be buried in the family lot at Glenside Cemetery, Winthrop, next to his wife, in the spring.
