SORRENTO – Lawrence Lewis died expectedly Oct. 31, 2005, at his home in Sorrento. He was born April 9, 1928, in New Haven, Conn. Mr. Lewis taught as principal in Milbridge High School. These were among his best students. He also served as guidance director in Belfast and as superintendent in Alton, Bradley, Greenbush, Burlington, Enfield, LaGrange, Greenfield and Milford. He was honored to serve as president of both the Maine Personnel and Guidance Association and the Maine School Superintendents’ Association. He took great pride in serving as interim principal and superintendent in a number of Maine towns. Blue Hill always held a special place in his heart. Larry, sometimes known as “Double L”, is survived by his children, Lawrence Lewis, Susan Lewis Hodgkins, Heather DuBois, Shawn Murphy, and Ryan Murphy. He was the husband of the late is Cathy Kindbom Lewis, a remarkable hunter of geese and fisherman for Atlantic salmon. Their great pleasure in pursuit of fish and geese made them both smile. Together they enjoyed their work in education beginning in 1971. They were partners in making opportunities for young people to grow and learn, particularly in coastal Maine schools. For all those whose lives Mr. Lewis affected in some way, please remember him with smiles. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at Sumner High School, Route 1, East Sullivan, with a light lunch to follow in the Sumner cafeteria.
