BANGOR – Lawrence “Skip” Shirland Sr., 62, of Greenbush, passed away Jan. 10, 2008, surrounded by his loving family, at a Bangor hospital. He was born June 14, 1945, in Milford, the son of Ralph B. Shirland Jr. and Hattie E. (Severance) Shirland. Skip worked at Owens-Illinois, Old Town; I.P. Stud mill, Passadumkeag; Georgia Pacific mill, Old Town and when it closed, he got a job at Brewer Super Wal-Mart. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and camper. His favorite pastime was spending time with his wife, grandchildren and family. Skip had a wonderful spirit and a great sense of humor, with a very strong work ethic and showed an unmatched strength of character, and was loved by many people. He is survived by his beloved wife and best bud of 41 1/2 years, Helen (Dalrymple) Shirland; children, Susan and Michael Richard, Lawrence Shirland Jr. and Tonya Shirland; grandchildren, Danielle and Devan Richard and Lawrence “Clarke” Shirland; sisters, Florence Smith, Nellie and Jerry Fraser, Geneine Bouchard, Nancy and Curt Whitney, and Lynn and Linwood Holmes; 21 nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and great-nephews, aunts and uncles, many beloved friends and co-workers at Brewer Super Wal-Mart; the special “Bag” brothers, Bob Modery and Jim Gauthier; four special friends and neighbors, Ralph and Katie Clarke, and Bob and Helen Avery; and thanks to the Richard family. A special thanks to Pastor Terry Upcott and all of the people who cared for Skip at Eastern Maine Medical Center and CancerCare of Maine, for the excellent care and personal attention he received. The family would like everyone to know that the love and support that was bestowed during these trying times was felt and very much appreciated. The family would like to have his memory honored in your heart. Arrangements are entrusted to Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town.
