PENOBSCOT – Lewis B. Webster, 83, died June 6, 2005, in Blue Hill. He was born April 8, 1922, in Castine, the son of Emery and Mabel (Bowden) Webster. Lewis spent his childhood in Castine before moving to Penobscot. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during World War II and was a recipient of the Bronze Star for heroism after he and other soldiers blew up a bridge on successive nights in France in 1945 to thwart an approaching German tank column. He owned and operated Webster’s Garage in Penobscot for 36 years. Lewis loved to go harness racing, enjoyed duck hunting in his younger years, and greatly enjoyed gardening and had a roadside vegetable stand on the Castine Road for many years. He loved the Boston Red Sox but suffered along with all other Red Sox fans through many years of disappointments. He was extremely pleased when the Boston Red Sox won the World Series in 2004. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dorothy (Hutchins) Webster; daughter, Patricia and her husband, Kenneth S. Flannery; grandsons, Kenneth P. Flannery, Michael R. Flannery and his wife, Carol, Steven B. Flannery and his wife, Terri, Brad S. Flannery and his wife, Wendy; 13 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by granddaughter, Joanne E. Trefethen. A graveside funeral service will be held 12 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, 2005, at the Castine Cemetery, Castine.
