FORT KENT – Lionel “Babe” Smart, 80, passed away Dec. 31, 2004, in route to Northern Maine Medical Center after a short illness. He was born April 13, 1924, in Eagle Lake the son of Augustin and Sophie (Raymond) Smart. He is survived by his wife, Juliette (Roy) Smart of Fort Kent; two sons, Robert Augustin Smart of Middletown, Conn., and Paul Lionel Smart of Fort Kent; three grandchildren, Matthew Robert Smart of Nieco, Ga., Adam James Smart of Saltlake City, Utah, Micah Augustin Smart of Middletown, Conn.; and several nieces and nephews. Babe served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning an honorable discharge in 1945. He was in the words of newsman Tom Brokaw, a member of the “greatest generation, having fought a Bastogne in the closing months of the European Theatre. Lionel was known as Babe to his friends and relatives, and worked with his wife Juliette at Smart’s Beauty Shop in Fort Kent, for nearly 40 years. He belonged to the Fourth Assembly of the Knights of Columbus No. 0352, and the VFW Post No. 9609, both of Fort Kent, and a long time parishioner of St. Louis Catholic Parish. His friends will remember him fondly as an honorable and generous man, and his family will miss him terribly. He was the best of husbands, the greatest of fathers and the kindest of friends.
