ROCKLAND – Loren L. Harvey Jr. died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at Maine Medical Center, Portland, after a long illness. Loren was born March 16, 1933, in Rockland, the son of Dorothy Williams and Loren L. Harvey Sr. From an early age Loren was brought up by his grandparents, Lovina and Sterling Gross. Loren graduated in the Class of 1951 and kept track of all his classmates, especially enjoying class reunions. Loren served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955. For 35 years, he lived on Payson Lane, living next door at the farm from age 16. Loren was self-employed as an appliance serviceman after previously working for Central Maine Power Co., in their service department and for his cousin, Les Harvey. Since retiring, Loren enjoyed mowing his lawn, shoveling snow, painting his house and feeding wild birds and animals. For nearly 50 years he played Santa Claus for all his nieces and nephews as well as his own children who never guessed who he was. Loren enjoyed playing Old Maid with all the younger nieces and teasing them. Loren was friends with everyone in the neighborhood and always carried dog bones for all the dogs. He enjoyed boating and for many years had his own boat. In later years he enjoyed sailing with his daughter, Susan and her husband, Bill, on their boat, Rondo. Loren is survived by his wife of 53 years, Ruth A. Harvey of Rockland; daughter, Susan Henderson and her husband, William, of St. George; son, David Harvey of Warren; sister, Loretta Nash and her husband, Franklin, of Rockville; sisters-in-law, Carol Paulson, Patricia Laxton, both of St. George; brothers-in-law, Alvin Hawkins of St. George and John Hawkins of Stonington; and his cousin, RaeAnn McCluskey of Thomaston; as well as many nieces, nephews and many friends. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, at Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins Funeral Home, 110 Limerock St., Rockland, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Walden Chandler officiatiating. Interment will be held after the service at North Parish Cemetery, Wiley’s Corner, St. George.
