BREWER – Louis G. Leakos, 79, a summer resident of Lucerne-in-Maine, died Sept. 1, 2006, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born in Skowhegan, the son of George and Helen (Smyrnios) Leakos. Louis was a graduate of Skowhegan High School and attended the University of Maine – Farmington. He was a veteran of World War II and served with the 143rd Naval Battalion in the Asiatic-Pacific theater. He was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Area Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Medal. Upon discharge, he returned to Bangor where he owned and operated Leakos Market on Center Street. In 1960, he established the IGA Foodliner, one of the first major supermarkets in the greater Bangor-Brewer area. In subsequent years, he owned and operated several supermarkets in Maine and New Hampshire. He also operated the Brewer IGA Coffee Shop for more than 30 years. In recent years, he managed John-ny’s Pub in Brewer. Louis was a lifelong member and former president of the board of St. George Greek Orthodox Church. He was a member of St. Andrews Lodge No. 83, AF & AM Anah Shriners, Bangor-Brewer Shrine Club and the Lions Club. Louis was predeceased by his wife, Georgia (Brountas) Leakos. He is survived by and will be greatly missed by his two daughters, Elaine D. Leakos and Penelope Leakos, both of West Roxbury, Mass.; two sons, George L. Leakos and Christopher P. Leakos, both of Brewer; one brother, Steve Leakos of Torrence, Calif.; two grandchildren, Nich-olas G. Leakos and Dianna N. Leakos; sister-in-law, Helen B. Nichols of Roslindale, Mass.; brothers-in-law, Nicholas P. Brountas and Arthur P. Brountas, both of Bangor and Paul P. Brountas of Weston, Mass. Friends may call 5-7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 4, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a Trisagion service will be held 6:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 5, at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 90 Sanford St., Bangor, with the Rev. Adam Metropoulos, Presbyter, officiating. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor.
