NORTHEAST HARBOR – Lucy Hannah Smith, 84, of Northeast Harbor, died peacefully at her home on Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, after a relatively short battle with a very aggressive brain tumor. She was born Lucy Hannah Lee on Sep. 15, 1919, in Bridgeport, Conn., the first child of George W. and Gladys D. Lee. Lucy was raised and schooled in Lawrence, Mass., and at the age of 16 became the Salutatorian of her graduating class at Lawrence High. She enrolled at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass., in the fall of 1936, and four years later was graduated from there with a major in French. Lucy came to Northeast Harbor after her junior year in college to work at the Kimball House, a noted seaside hotel at that time. After graduation from Mt. Holyoke she returned to Northeast Harbor for one last summer of youth. Fortunately for the citizens of Northeast, she stayed the rest of her life. It was there that she met Richard Smith, the man she would soon marry. It was also there that she became a fine model of democratic citizenship. Her life was filled with love and great friendships. In her working world, she was a business owner, organization leader and a dedicated servant of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. She and Richard owned and operated the Towne House Restaurant in Northeast Harbor from 1947 to 1968. In the 1970s and 1980s, she held many positions with the Maine Federation of Women’s Clubs. Her devoted service to this organization peaked in a term as State President from 1980 to 1982. At St. Mary’s, she was at different times a Sunday school teacher, an organist, a church Treasurer, a vestry member and head of the Altar Guild. Lucy also spent much time serving the Northeast Harbor Library as treasurer and member of the board of directors. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Sr., a longtime Northeast Harbor Postmaster, in Jan., 1987; and by her sister-in-law, Carolyn Lee of Cape Elizabeth in Aug., 1997. Lucy is survived by a son, Richard Jr. and his wife, Mary, of Gardiner; a brother, Robert A. Lee of Scarborough; a niece and husband, Barbara and Ted Sergi of W. Hartford, Conn.; a niece, Linda Lee of Deerfield, N.H.; and two grandnephews, Nick Sergi of Springfield, Mo., and Greg Sergi of Durham, N.C. She is also survived by four new friends, Richard Jr.’s son, Bill Rand and his wife, Jacqueline, and their two beautiful children, Brian and Tyler, all of Bradley. There will be a memorial service 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at St Mary’s-By-The-Sea Episcopal Church, Shore Road, Northeast Harbor, with Rev. David J. Lucey presiding. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Northeast Harbor. A fellowship gathering at St Mary’s winter chapel will follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St Mary’s Altar Guild, care of St Mary’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 105, Northeast Harbor, ME, 04662 or the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements in care of Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 1139 Main St., Mt. Desert.
