CARIBOU – Mabel J. Bennett Leavitt, 92, died May 29, 2005, at Caribou. She was born Aug. 3, 1912, in Limestone the daughter of Clarence and Kate (Willey) Bennett. She was a graduate of Limestone High School as well as the Aroostook State Normal School. Mabel taught school in Limestone for a short time until her marriage to James E. Leavitt in 1934. She and Jim had five children during their farming years in Limestone and Caribou. She was a great cook and will be fondly remembered for her great bread, pies, cookies, cakes and baked beans. She helped on the family farm and raised her children until they started on their own life’s path, after which she worked at FW Woolworth’s in Caribou for 12 years. She was forced to retire due to age limitation at that time. She soon settled into being a homemaker again, taking up cross-stitching, embroidery and crocheting. Over the years, she made afghans for each member of her family. Mabel was a longtime member of the Caribou United Baptist Church and the Limestone Grange. She is survived by her five children, Sylvia Abbott of Anaheim, Calif., Jan Loomer of Henderson, Nev., David Leavitt and Diana Demerchant, both of Woodland and Kerry Leavitt of Anaheim, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Tim, Kim, Craig, Jimmy, Angela, David Jr., Michael, Christopher, Donny and Richie; eight great-grandchildren, Jack, Jasmine, Ryan, Janelle, Craig Jr., Janny, Shannon and Rebecca; two great-great-grandchildren, Isabel and Xavier. Mrs. Leavitt was predeceased by her husband of more than 68 years, Jim in 2002; two brothers, Roy and Harold Bennett; and two sisters, Alice Bennett Dozier and Flossie Bennett. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, at the Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, June 2, 2005, from the Chapel of the Mockler Funeral Home, with the Rev. John Kiehn, pastor of the Caribou United Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Webster Cemetery.
