MABEL R. (MCFARLANE) SAWYER MILLINOCKET – Mabel R. (McFarlane) Sawyer, 90, passed away Thursday, May 6, 2004, at a Lincoln healthcare facility. She was born Dec. 2, 1913, the daughter of Leo and Ella (Walls) McFarlane. She was a communicant of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church and a life time member of Little Flower Circle Daughters of Isabella. She was also a member of the Emblem Club. Mabel owned her own bakery for many years, and also worked at Bess’s Diner in Millinocket to support her family of three children. She also worked as a chef at Kidney Pond Camps. She is survived by her children, Carl and his wife, Neanie Sawyer, of Millinocket, and Betty and her husband, Richy Wheaton, of Bangor; her siblings, Gladys Taylor, Leona Rice, and Alice and husband, Dr. Harold Boynton; five grandchildren, Terry Sportelli, Carla and Rick Bean, Lori Fitzgerald, Tori and Kevin Brown, Mark and Brenda Wheaton; 11 great-grandchildren, Jesse and Renee Bean, Jeremy Munoz, Brad Fitzgerald, Leanne Sportelli, P.F.C. Joseph Sportelli, USMC, Nicholus Sportelli, Joshua Brown and Toni Brown, Stephanie and Jon Haskins, Michelle Wheaton, Jessica Wheaton, Brandy Liz Wheaton; two great-great-grandchildren, Garrett R. Haskins and Isaac Haskins; many nieces and nephews. Mabel was predeceased by her husband, Frank L. Sawyer in 1933; one son, Frank L. Sawyer in 1988; a grandson, Richard J. Wheaton in 1999; a granddaughter, Vicky Wheaton Nichuals in 2001, and her siblings, Anna K. Nerney, Bernetta Trainor, Patricia Dunne, John L. McFarlane, and Janice I. McFarlane; and by a special niece, Sylvia Small. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 7, 2004, at R.L. Bouchard Funeral Home, 11 Tamarack St., Millinocket, where the Daughters of Isabella will recite the Rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, May 8 at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church.
