OAKFIELD – Madelyn L. Smallwood, 93, passed away April 10, 2007, at a local health care facility. She was born Aug. 26, 1913, in Weston, the daughter of Maurice and Laila (Smart) White. Mrs. Smallwood attended schools in Danforth and Smyrna Mills, and graduated from Merrill High School in 1931. She was a 1933 graduate of Presque Isle Normal School and the Aroostook State College earning a Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1968. Mrs. Smallwood began her teaching career in a one room school in Merrill. She was a fourth, fifth and sixth grade teacher in Smyrna Mills for 17 years and taught grade five in Oakfield for 19 years. She married George Smallwood Jr. in 1937. She was a member of the National Education Association, the Maine Teachers Association, the Maine Retired Teachers Association, and the Oakfield Senior Citizens, where she was treasurer for several years, and the United Methodist Church, Smyrna Mills. Mrs. Smallwood is survived by her children, Marilyn Ellis and her husband, Gerald, of New Limerick, Paul Smallwood and his wife, Peggy, of Clayton, N.C., George Smallwood III and his wife, Trina, of Homer, Alaska; grandchildren, Cathy Belyea and her husband, Wayne, of Houlton, Joann Swales and her husband, William, of Bangor, Bill Smallwood and his wife, Tamra, of North Carolina, Philip Smallwood of North Carolina, David Smallwood of Portland and Tuyet Smallwood and her husband, Pat, of Alaska; six great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, George in 1957; two brothers, a sister and a granddaughter. Friends may call 4-6 p.m. Friday at Dunn Funeral Home. A private funeral service will be held Saturday.
