BANGOR – Marcella (Shapiro) Glazier, 93, died Nov. 9, 2004, at a local healthcare center. She was born Aug. 21, 1911, in Auburn, a daughter of Moses and Pauline (Newmark) Shapiro. A graduate of Bates College, Marcella pursued a master’s degree in social work from Columbia University. She traveled all over western Maine, working to better the lives of children who were in the care of the State of Maine. After she met and married Frank Glazier, she moved to Bangor to work with him in his family business, Clare’s, in downtown Bangor. She encouraged Frank during his time in the Maine State Legislature and was known to all in the downtown area for her sharp wit and gift of gab. She continued to run the business with Alan, her son, for 17 years after Frank’s death in 1971. Marcella was a longtime member of the original Hadassah study group in Bangor. She was a member of Congregation Beth Israel and a lifetime member of the Sisterhood there. She is survived by her son, Alan Glazier, his wife, Deborah, and grandchildren, Sarah Pauline Glazier and Jonathan Philip Glazier. She will be sorely missed by her sister, Annette Singer of Brunswick; nephew, Ira Singer; Ira’s wife, Susan Gallagher of Newburyport, Mass.; and nephew, Asa Singer of Islip Terrace, N.Y.; Asa’s wife, Nadine, and their sons, Charles and Peter. A funeral will be held 12 noon Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, at the Jewish Chapel on Center Street in Bangor with the Rabbi David A. Cantor officiating. Burial will follow at the Beth Israel Cemetery.
