MACHIAS and WASHBURN Marion Alice (Hodgkins) Schoppee, 84, went to be with her Lord on Feb. 6, 2004, at the home of her youngest son, Richard L. Hartford, following a long illness. She was born Oct. 15, 1919, at Columbia, the fifth of six children of Orrin Augustus and Myrtie Elosia (Higgins) Hodgkins of Addison. She graduated from Addison High School in 1937, and moved to Machias in 1943. She was a hard working housewife raising three children during the war years and managing to keep the family together. Those were tough years but her determination and sacrifices saw the family through and instilled in her children pride in the family unit. Marion enjoyed flower gardening, the outdoors and was an avid reader her whole life until the onset of her illness. During her lifetime she had always jotted down genealogical data on the family lines and following the publication of Alex Haley’s “Roots” she became inspired and was a frequent visitor at the Porter Memorial Library in Machias, researching the genealogy files. Because of her efforts the family has documented roots that can be passed on for generations to come. She is survived by her daughter, Virginia L. (Hartford) Davis of Woodbridge, Va.; her sons, David L. Hartford and wife, Maria, of North Kingstown, R.I., and Richard L. Hartford and wife, Audrey, of Washburn; her grandchildren, Penny M. (Davis) Sorbor and her husband, Robert, of Front Royal, Va., Leroy S. Davis Jr. of Melbourne, Fla., Larry R. Davis and his wife, Susan, of Silver Spring, Md., Shelley L. (Davis) Shearer and her husband, Steven, of Dale City, Va., James L. Hartford of North Kingstown, R.I., Richard L. Hartford Jr., and his wife, Barbie, of Dalton, N.H., Kevin J. Hartford and his wife, Sally, of Hermon, Terrance L. Hartford and his wife, Sarah, of South Portland, Michael L. Hartford and his wife, Beth, of Crouseville; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews; special friends, John and Ida McEacharn and Roberta Wolfe of Machias. She was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence R. Schoppee, who died Oct. 7, 1981; her parents; her siblings, Mable L. “Mamie” Trundy, Bertha J. Leighton, John L. Hodgkins, Edith L. Hodgkins and Gertrude E. Dorr; a son-in-law, Leroy Davis; and a grandson, Edward Davis. A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias. She will be buried beside her husband in the East Kennebec Cemetery, Machias, at a date to be announced at the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions in Marion’s memory to the Porter Memorial Library Building Fund, 52 Court St., Machias, ME 04654.
