BRUNSWICK – Marion E. Varney, 77, of Theodore Drive died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at Mid Coast Hospital. She was born in Newport, March 29, 1926, the daughter of Paul V. and Thelma Dunifer Witham. She attended local schools and graduated from Newport High School, Class of 1943. She then went on to study at the Maine School of Commerce in Bangor, which is now Husson College. On May 15, 1949 she married I. Clifford Varney Jr. in Newport. They made their home in Woolwich and then later moved to the Brunswick area. Marion worked for the Bangor & Aroostook Railroad and the Maine Central Railroad for several years. In 1982, she retired from Thompson, Desmond, & Payne Insurance Co. in Bath, after working more than 20 years as an Underwriter. In her spare time, she enjoyed working around the yard and tending to the gardens and rearranging the furniture in the house. Following retirement, Marion and Clifford enjoyed traveling, going on three cruises. She was predeceased by a brother, Paul V. Witham Jr. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, a brother, John I. Witham of Tucson, Ariz. and several nieces and nephews. At the family’s request there will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at the David E. Desmond Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath, ME 04530. Burial will be in the spring in Newport.
