FORT FAIRFIELD – Marion Haines Conant, 92, died March 9, 2004, at a Caribou healthcare facility after a brief illness. She was born July 19, 1911, in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Bertrand L. and Flora (Haley) Haines. The Haines’ ancestors were early Fort Fairfield settlers, arriving in 1844. Mrs. Conant attended Fort Fairfield schools and trained as a nurse. Her caring personality and interest in the well-being of her patients earned her much respect and admiration in the medical field as well as the community. She was married to her first husband, Kenneth Foster, of Fort Fairfield, who predeceased her many years ago. Later, she married William Conant and moved to Connecticut, where they lived for several years prior to returning to Fort Fairfield. She was a member of the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Fort Fairfield, the former Fort Fairfield Chapter of Order of the Eastern Star, Friendly Group, and the former Fort Fairfield Grange. In addition to her first husband, she was predeceased by her second husband; one son, Neal Foster; and one stepson, Ross Conant; one brother, Willard Haines; three half brothers, Keene, Theodore and Graydon Haines. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John B. and Natalie Foster; one daughter-in-law, Delina “Deanie” Foster, all of Fort Fairfield; two stepsons, Charles Conant and his wife, Anne, of Waterbury, Conn., Preston Conant and his wife, Joyce, of Pennsylvania; nine grandchildren, Dan K. Foster, of Fort Fairfield, Beth Findlen of Portland, John Foster Jr. and his wife, Louise, of Stockton Springs, Carol Hetrick and her husband, Jerry, of Mansville, Texas, Betty McVickar and her husband, William, of Calais, Roger Foster and his wife, Tammy, of Caswell, David Foster and his wife, Kerrie, of Augusta, Sally McNamee of Stockton Springs, Paula Foster of Weymouth, Mass.; 15 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews including a very special niece, Katherine Haines McKenny of Fort Fairfield. Friends may call 1-2 p.m. Friday, March 12, 2004, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 166 Main St., Fort Fairfield. The funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Susan Murphy officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield, later in the spring. A time of fellowship with refreshments will be held at the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Hall, immediately following the funeral service.
