VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. and MACHIAS – Marion McCarty Bagley, 91, passed away on Oct. 23, 2004, after a long illness. Mrs. Bagley was born May 15, 1913, in Trescott, the daughter of Charles A. and Ida (Murray) McCarty. She graduated from Lubec High School and attended Mt. St. Vincent College in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Washington State Teachers College, her master’s degree and post master’s degree of education from the University of Maine in Orono. She was an educator throughout her life, beginning in a one room schoolhouse. She held various teaching positions in Washington County and then in the Machias school system for many years, first as a teacher, and then as the guidance councilor. Upon her retirement from teaching, she was employed by the State of Maine Department of Vocational Education for many years. She was a member of Maine Teacher’s Association, serving as president for one term, National Education Association, Retired Teachers, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Lambda Chapter. She served as Lambda Chapter President, Alpha Phi State President, and Northeast Regional Director. She was also author of activity text books on Maine history and world geography. She shared her hobby, hand precision quilting, with many people, teaching classes for many years throughout the Down East region. She is a former winner of the Jefferson Award and is listed in Who’s Who in American Women. She was predeceased by her husband, Burton N. Bagley, in March 1985. She is survived by her daughter, MaryAnn and husband, Douglas Roley; two grandsons, Sean M. Roley, Kristen V. Roley and wife Kimberly; three great-grandchildren, Colin Kelly, Devin McCarty, and Morrigan Leslie, all of Virginia Beach, Va.; her sister, Christine Gilpatrick of Whiting; and a niece and nephew. A Christian wake will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, Bragdon Kelley Campbell Funeral Home in Machias. A Requiem Mass will be said 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Holy Name Catholic Church, Machias, with Fr. John O’Hara presiding. Burial in Whiting Village Cemetery will follow.
