MARTHA LOUISE ‘MARTY LOU’ BELL HANCOCK – Martha Louise “Marty Lou” Bell, 78, died March 22, 2005 at Collier’s Rehab and Nursing Home surrounded by loving friends and family after a long illness. She was born Jan. 1, 1927, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of James and Sally (Hamlin) Denton. She was educated at Brooklyn, N.Y. Friends School and at Westtown School in Westtown, Pa., from whence she graduated in 1944. She received further education at Wellesley College in Wellesley, Mass., graduating in 1948 with a BA. In that same year, she married Harrison Bell of Hancock. He had a year to go at Cornell and she made use of her time by learning to use the first IBM computer while residing in Ithaca. The newly married couple lived in Cambridge, Mass., where their first child, Sally was born. While in Connecticut, they resided in Cos Cob and Riverside, both sections of Greenwich. It was while they were here that their other children, Martha, Judy and Charles were born. Subsequently, they lived in Morristown and Glen Ridge, N.J., and ended up in Guttenburg, N.J. their last stop before returning to Maine. On moving back to Maine in 1984, they opened up a small press of their own. Martha worked along side her husband until 1985 when she became a corporation member at the Jackson Lab in Bar Harbor. Martha is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Harrison; three daughters, Sally and her husband, John Fink, of Ellsworth, Martha and her husband, Robert Bell, of Cresskill, N.J. and Judith and her husband, Roger Graf, of Aromas, Calif.; three grandchildren, Katherine Fink, presently a senior at Boston University, Victoria Bell, currently enrolled at Brandeis University and Madeline Bell, a student in Cresskill, N.J. high school. She was predeceased by her stepsister, Florence Horton; stepbrothers, Arthur and Thomas Denton; a son, Charles Edward Bell II; and a foster son, William (Rabbit) Wells. There will be a special invitation only memorial service for Martha beginning at 4 p.m. Monday, April 4. A buffet will be served after the service. Another memorial service will be held in the summer in the chapel at Hancock Point. Friends wishing to contribute in Martha’s memory may do so to Hancock County Homecare and Hospice, P. O.
