BANGOR – Mary Catherine Fernald of Bangor, wife of Laurence D. Fernald Sr. and daughter of the late Frank P. and Catherine Sullivan McDonough, took the promised hand of her Savior and received her heavenly reward June 20, 2005. She was born June 14, 1917, in Bangor. Mary graduated from St. Mary’s School and John Bapst High School and, after working for a short while at J.J. Newberry’s in Bangor, devoted her life to her husband and children. She was married to Laurence D. Fernald Sept. 2, 1940, at St. Mary’s Church, where she had been baptized. She gave life and inspiration to six children, Laurence D. Fernald Jr. and his wife, Bonnie, of Ellsworth, their children, Lance, Joanna and Joseph, David A. Fernald and his wife, Jane, of Farmington, Conn., their children, Wendy, Jenny and Timothy, MaryCarol Rumsey and her husband, Charles III of Bangor, their children, Patricia, Catherine, Charles IV and Christopher, Eileen K. Fowler and her husband, J. Donald, of Charlotte, N.C., Richard E. Fernald and his wife, Judith, of Hampden, their children, Kate, Erin and Kathryn and Jo Ann Wicks and her husband, Ken, of Bangor and their children, Cassandra and Allison. She was also greatly blessed by 11 great-grandchildren. She is survived by one sister, Joanne A. Leete of Cape Elizabeth; a brother-in-law, Kenneth E. Fernald of Grand Bend, Ontario; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Clark, of Hampden; several cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her mother and father in 1970 and 1971; a sister, Winifred McDonough Kelsey in 1948; and by a brother, Francis P. McDonough in 1989. Relatives and friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial, will be celebrated 11 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Lequin, pastor, presider. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Catholic Cemetery. Contributions in her memory may be made to St. Mary’s Church.
