MARY ELIZABETH (DAY) HAWKINS CAMDEN – Mary Elizabeth (Day) Hawkins, 85, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2007, of natural causes at Penobscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport. She was born Nov. 27, 1921, in Brooklin. Mary was the daughter of Frank L. Day and Myrtle Nevells Day of Brooklin. Mary graduated valedictorian of her class from Brooklin High School, took postgraduate classes at Higgins Classical Institute and attended nursing school. She was an avid bridge player – life master and enjoyed reading, and the challenge of a good puzzle and games of any kind. The windjammer, Mary Day, has the honor of bearing her name and was christened by Mary at her launching in 1962. She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend. She is survived by her two sons, Havilah and Ron Hawkins; her two grandchildren, Caleb and Mari Hawkins; her daughter-in-law, Beverly Hawkins; nieces, Lois Washburn and Mary Colcord; and nephews, James Day and Stephen Day. She was predeceased by her husband, Havilah S. Hawkins; and her two brothers, Frank L. Day Jr. and Arno Day. The family extends their sincerest appreciation and gratitude to the caregivers of Penobscot Bay Medical Center and Windward Gardens, who graciously and cheerfully supported Mary. In lieu of a memorial service, the family requests that memories be shared whenever mutual friends and family congregate. Contributions would be appreciated for a bench in memory of Mary Day Hawkins and Capt. Havilah S. Hawkins at Camden town landing.
