FORT FAIRFIELD and PRESQUE ISLE – Mary P. Cheney 86, wife of the late Harold “Hal” Cheney, died July 8, 2004, at a Presque Isle healthcare facility. She was born Sept. 8, 1917, in Fort Fairfield, the daughter of Thomas E. and Cenith (Watt) Houghton. She was a member of the Presque Isle Congregational Church. Mary graduated from Fort Fairfield High School in 1933, attended Ricker College and later graduated from Bryant College in Providence, R.I. Following graduation she became employed at the State House in Augusta, until her marriage to Hal. She then spent the next several years following her husband’s baseball career. They began farming back in Presque Isle in 1946, continuing until 1965. Mary was a past member of the Presque Isle Lionettes. She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed cooking and knitting. In addition to her husband of 53 years, she was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas and Jack Houghton. Surviving her are two daughters; Susan F. Nickerson and her husband, Ed, of Mapleton, and Linda J. Corrow of Anaheim, Calif.; five grandchildren, Robert W. Eager and his wife, Renee`, David Eager and his wife, Rosemary, Tamie Jarvis, John Corrow and his wife, Gina, and Karen Corrow; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Frances Whited of Fort Fairfield; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 13, at the Presque Isle Congregational Church, 29 Church St., with the Rev. Dr. Robert Grove-Markwood officiating. Relatives and friends may call at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to C-A-N-C-E-R, P.O. Box 811, Presque Isle, ME 04769. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Fort Fairfield. Arrangements are in the care of the Duncan-Graves Funeral Home in Presque Isle.
