AUGUSTA – Maxine B. Smith, 86, a long time resident of Back Street, North Monmouth, died Monday, April 14, 2008, at Gray Birch-Maine General Rehabilitation & Nursing, Augusta, after being a resident since August 2007. She was born Dec. 27, 1921, in Littleton, the daughter of George and Verla (Crouse) Grass. She attended Logan School, Littleton. Maxine worked as a nurse at Togus Veterans’ Hospital, Augusta, retiring in 1987. She had also worked at Albany Felt, North Monmouth and many area nursing homes, having spent the last 10 years at Togus. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, reading, crossword and word search puzzles, and her family. She is survived by a son, Darryl Smith of Winthrop; two daughters, Paulette Walsh of Wilmington, N.C., and Wilma Merrill of West Gardiner; a brother, Dean O. Grass of Monmouth; two sisters, Ruth MacDonald of Houlton and Leota Hare of Hodgdon; three grandchildren, Jessica Sardinas and her husband, Mike, Norma Walsh and Lynda Shaw; five great-grandchildren, Hannah, Erica, Jason, Brady and Jesse; and a great-great-granddaughter, Ava. She was predeceased by a daughter, Lorraine Smith; a sister, Iona Merrill; and three brothers, George, William and Galen “Bud” Grass. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, April 17, at Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, at the funeral home.
