CARDVILLE – Maxine Burpee, 86, wife of the late David M. Burpee, to whom she was married for 60 years, died peacefully Feb. 18, 2008, at a Bangor health care facility. Maxine was born July 10, 1921, in Cardville. She spent most of her life caring for her family and home, enjoyed gardening, cooking, canning vegetables and preserves, and embroidery. She also loved caring for her lovebirds, parakeets and feeding the many wild birds around her home. She was predeceased by two brothers, Clemont and Russell White; and a great-grandaughter, Jessica Gibbons. She is survived by three sons, Walter Burpee and his wife, Phyllis, of Plymouth, Russell Burpee and his wife, Marie, of Eddington, Paul Burpee and his wife, Vicki, of Glenburn; and a daughter, Arlene Slade and her husband, Wayne, of Bangor. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Debra Burpee of Dixmont, Traci Adams of Orrington, Cori Burpee of Bangor, Michelle Burpee of Olamon, Wayne “Jay” Slade Jr. of Milford, Linda Wander and Susan West of Huntsville, Ala., and Mary Doane of Deerfield, N.H. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren, Bryant, Miles, Delaney, Alyssa, Benjamin, Kimberly, Bradley, Jackson and Claire; one great-great-granddaughter, Brittany; great-niece, Michela Croke of Milford, Conn.; and longtime friend, Barbara Weymouth. She also leaves behind a special friend at the nursing facility, Mary Frazier. Maxine was a kind and loving person and will be sadly missed by her family, friends and the many wonderful people who cared for her at Bangor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and St. Joseph Hospital. Family and friends may call 1-2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, where a service will be held 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to American Heart Association, 343 Gorham Road, South Portland, ME 04106-2317.
