NEWPORT and DOVER-FOXCROFT – Merle S. Lowell, 83, died April 3, 2006, at a Pittsfield hospital. Merle was born Sept 23, 1922, in Derby, the son of Jeptha P. and Bessie (Ladd) Lowell. In his younger years, Merle worked at various area businesses, including the canning factory and Irving Tanning Company in Hartland. He also worked at many local chicken and dairy farms. Merle enjoyed fishing with his sons, attending yard sales, going for long rides in the car and gardening. Most Pittsfield residents will remember the gardens Merle installed and cared for in the small strips of land between the sidewalks and the street in the center of town while he was a resident there. Merle is survived by three daughters, Estelle Tozier and Velma Withee, both of Hartland and Bonnie Coombs and her husband, Gerald, of Garland; two sons, William Lowell and his companion, Annette, and Richard Lowell and his wife, Missy, all of Newport. He is also survived by a sister, Virginia Smith of Sebec; and seven grandchildren, Missy, Charlie, Wendell, Derrick, James, Ashley and Joshua. He will be missed dearly by his long time companion, Evelyn White of Madison; and his dear friend, Lois Brooks of Pittsfield. Merle was predeceased by his wife, Annie; a son, Dale Allan; a sister, Phyllis Saunders; three brothers, Morgan, Manuel, and Miles Lowell; and three sons-in-law, Blaine Tozier, Robert Bonsey and Walter Withee. Friends are invited to call from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service 11 a.m. Friday, April 7, at the Lary Funeral Home, Dover-Foxcroft, with the Rev. Barry Buzzell of the Garland Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Lee Cemetery, Dover-Foxcroft.
