WHITING – Michael A. Riggs, 47, passed away unexpectedly, Aug. 13, 2007, in Machias. He was born Sept. 12, 1959, in Clinton, Mass., the son of Christine (Knight) Riggs of Whiting and the late Joseph Riggs, who died in 2003. Mike graduated from Wash-ington Academy in 1977. In 1978 after his graduation, he married Michele (McPherson) Riggs, whom as of Aug. 12, he had shared 29 years of marriage with. He worked for the sheriff’s department for 23 years as a patrol deputy, Maine drug enforcement officer, chief deputy, ICE agent, and a special deputy U.S. Marshall. Mike was inducted in 1995 into the American Policemen’s Hall of Fame. During his time as a deputy, Mike trained his partner, Rocky, a police dog, who he enjoyed working with during his career. He was an animal lover. Mike loved old cars. He was also an avid motorcyclist, boater and fisherman. He loved spending time with his family. He also enjoyed going to Laconia, N.H., with his friends. Mike was a kind and generous man, always putting everyone before himself. In addition to his wife, Michele, he is survived by a daughter, Tabitha Riggs; a son, Michael Joseph Riggs and wife, Jessie; his mother, Christine Riggs; a brother, Herbert Riggs and wife, Laurel; several nieces, nephews and many special friends. Services will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20, at Centre Street Congregational Church, Machias, with the Rev. Gini King officiating. Immediately after the service, burial will be held at Whiting Cemetery, Whiting. Friends are invited to a time of fellowship with the family after the service at the Whiting Community building.
