ORONO and BANGOR – Michael Henry Round, 67, died July 2, 2007, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Sept. 21, 1939, in Old Town, the son of Merton E. and Doris (LaPointe) Round. Michael graduated from Bangor High School, a proud member of the Class of 1957. He served his country in the U.S. Army in the 82nd Air Bourne and Special Forces. Michael then graduated from the University of Maine in Orono with a bachelor’s degree in education in 1965. For many years he worked for Sears & Roebuck in management, then worked in real estate franchise marketing and also with Webber Energy Fuels. Not one to ever “retire,” Mike returned to education the last eight years as a substitute teacher in the Bangor and Brewer school systems, where he loved expressing his passion for education with students and colleagues. He volunteered throughout his life, especially for the YMCA and the Orono-Old Town Kiwanis. For many years Mike coached his son, Tom, and many of his friends from T-ball through Little League. A voracious reader, Mike would often look at the material he wanted to read and say, “so many books, so little time.” This love for reading inspired him to be involved with the fundraising campaign for the Orono Public Library. Michael was an avid golfer and loved the Red Sox. Though he couldn’t hold a tune, Mike loved music, especially blues and jazz. He was the life of the party and loved to dance. He will be remembered by his friends at Pat’s Pizza for lively political discussion over morn-ing coffee followed by a cigar with his best friend, George. Mike adored his wife, Judy and they always found time for adventures or sitting by the river enjoying each other’s company. Mike embraced life to the fullest. As his Class of ’57 nickname “General” implies, he commanded attention but he also inspired people with his tremendous warmth and enthusiasm. He was filled with many ideas that he was unafraid to share, carried himself with boundless confidence and laughed with his whole body. His dog, Cocoa, will miss their many walks around Orono. Mike was devoted to his family and was truly content and happiest when he was surrounded by his children, who will dearly miss him. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Judith (Connors) Round of Orono; two sons, Matthew Round and wife, Liza, and Thomas Round, all of Bangor; two daughters, Kimberly Round and husband, Richard Brunck, of Tallahassee, Fla., and Bethany Round of Portland; two brothers, Fred Round and wife, Linda, of Bangor and Merton Round and wife, Martha, of Sebago; two sisters, Mary Smith and her husband, Manley, of Kennebunk and Serena Smith of Franklin; two grandchildren, Jessica and Samantha Round; many nieces, nephews and friends. Friends are invited to gather with the family for calling hours 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 5, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, July 6, with the Rev. Joseph Koury officiating. Interment will be at a later date at Riverside Cemetery, Orono. Those who wish to remember Michael in a special way may make contributions to the Orono Public Library Foundation, P.O. Box 308, Orono, ME 04473.
