BREWER – Mildred Gould Hallowell, 89, beloved wife of Lee Hallowell of Brewer, passed away peacefully at her home in Brewer, Nov. 5, 2003. She was born in Bucksport on Feb. 3, 1914, the daughter of Dr. Horace and Lenora Emerson Gould. The middle child and only daughter, Mildred, is survived by her brother, Dr. Horace Gould of Ellsworth and was predeceased by her brother, Dr. Philip Gould of Bucksport. Mildred was valedictorian of her Bucksport Seminary class and graduated from Machias Normal School, now the University of Maine, Machias. She served for a number of years as a Kindergarten teacher in Maine and Connecticut. She loved little children and delighted in entertaining them with stories and activities. Mildred was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Brewer for many years. A very kindly, loving, mild-mannered woman, she was an exceptional mother and wife. Mildred will always be remembered as an excellent cook. She compiled and published a collection of recipes, which is treasured by her family and friends. She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 64 years, Lee Hallowell and their two sons, David and his wife, Mary, of Bangor and Dr. Brian and his wife, Julee, of Calais; grandchildren, Jennifer H. Krygowski and her husband, David, of Albany, N.Y., Gregory Hallowell and his wife, Kristen, of Boston, Mass., and Amy H. Hayes and her husband, Derek, of Franklin, Mark Hallowell of Gorham, N.H., Scott Hallowell and his wife, Kristin and two great-grandchildren, Justin and Nicholas of Calais. Mildred is also survived by many wonderful nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at the First United Methodist Church of Brewer. Private interment will be held at the Riverview Cemetery in Bucksport at a later date with family only.
