BANGOR and ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. – Mildred Sprague, 78, died peacefully March 28, 2004, surrounded by her loving family. She was born July 4, 1925, in Bangor, the daughter of Leaman and Ida (Fletcher) Hamm. Mildred and her first husband, Harvey Sprague Sr. started Sprague’s Nursery in 1947. After his death in 1971, Mildred, Harvey and Dan continued to operate the nursery, expanding it to include a wholesale nursery and garden center. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Mildred was a member and past president of the Bangor Garden Club, a member of the YWCA, and a member and twice president of the Bangor Singles Club. Since 1981, she has spent her winters in Zephyrhills, Fla. Surviving are three children, Jeanne (Sprague) Hill and her husband, Rodney, Harvey Sprague Jr. and his wife, Diane, Daniel Sprague and his wife Donna, all of Bangor; nine grandchildren, the McElvain children, Annette, William Jr., Elizabeth, Paul and David; the Sprague family, Kimberley, Allyson, Brian and Christopher; one step-grandson, Tim Johnson; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; four stepchildren; a former daughter-in-law, Paulette Ferguson; two sisters, Ethel Blanchard of Bangor; Annie Allen of Hudson. Mildred was predeceased by her second husband, Charles “Edward” Buchanan, in 1977; and four brothers, Alton, Leaman, Walter and Hubert. Friends may call 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St. Bangor. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas Lequin, pastor, celebrant. Interment will be in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The family invites relatives and friends to a reception in the parish hall following the burial Wednesday.
