BELFAST – Mona Elizabeth Hanson, 93, passed away Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at PenBay Medical Center, Rockport. She was born May 5, 1913, in Waldo, the daughter of Van and Julia (Spinney) Gurney. Mona grew up in Belfast and lived a short time in Bangor before moving back to Belfast in 1929. She loved golf and was a member of the Northport Golf Club and wrote the Women’s Golf article for The Republican Journal. Mona and her husband loved to walk, enjoyed the outdoors, bowling and she was an excellent seamstress. She also was the social editor for The Republican Journal for 20 years. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Filmore Hanson; a sister, Florence Hansen; and a brother, Guy Gurney. Mona is survived by her daughter, Virginia Hanson Burrows of Belfast; sisters-in-law, Margaret Hanson Jardine and Katherine Hanson; a niece, Vivian Oructt of Whitman, Mass.; and nephews, Peter Hanson, Michael Hanson and David Marshall. Graveside services will be private at the convenience of the family at Grove Cemetery, Belfast. Arrangements are under the care of the Crabiel-Riposta Funeral Home, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
