SCHOHARIE, N.Y. – Mr. Joseph Walter Smart, 65, of Tristin Lane, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2006, at the Bassett Hospital of Schoharie County, Cobleskill, N.Y. Joe was born Oct. 19, 1940, in Edinburg, a son of Charles and Madeline (Bachelor) Smart. He was educated in Maine, graduating from Passadumkeag High School. He later enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served from 1959 to 1962. Upon his honorable discharge, he settled in Connecticut where he worked as an electrician. He moved to Schoharie in 1972 while working for the electricians union and also worked for Ottman & Enders. Along with an electrician, Joe also operated a construction and excavating business in Schoharie for many years and up until the time of his death. He was an avid race fan and attended many local race tracks, his favorite driver being Brett Hern. He also attended many NASCAR events and was an avid Jeff Gordon fan. Joe was also a member of the National Rifle Association and enjoyed big game hunting. He was married Oct. 19, 1968, to Catherine M. (Diamond) Smart, until her death, May 17, 1994. Survivors include one daughter, Kathy and her husband, Chuck Finch, of Schoharie, N.Y.; his siblings, Herbert Smart of Howland, Manson Smart of Passadumkeag, Joanne Neal of Howland and Shirley Ross of Lincoln; four grandchildren, Joseph, Jolita, Dylan and Dustin, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Elwood “Doug” Smart in 2001 and his sister, Geraldine Clukey in 1989. Calling hours will be held 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 27, at Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main St., Schoharie, N.Y. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at Valley Bible Baptist Church, State Route 30, Middleburgh, N.Y. Burial will be at Old Stone Fort Cemetery, Schoharie, N.Y.
