HOULTON – Muriel Grace (Golding) York, 91, died July 17, 2005, at a local hospital. She was born Nov. 1, 1913, in Houlton, the daughter of Wilfred “Bill” and Verda (Helms) Golding. Muriel attended Houlton schools and was a 1932 graduate of Houlton High School. She attended Houlton Business College, where she was always proud to have earned the highest marks ever given by the school for speed and accuracy in both typing and shorthand. In the 1930’s she worked as a court recorder and typist for the PWA and WPA. She and her husband Malcolm owned and operated York’s Radio & TV, and York’s Book Store and Houlton Cable T.V. Muriel was an accomplished pianist in both classical and popular music. She was the pianist for the Houlton High School Orchestra for four years and also studied classical music for three years with the Houlton Sisters of Mercy, during which time she won the honor of being chosen No. 1 pianist in the state of Maine by a panel of five judges. She always enjoyed entertaining young and old with her music. She was a member of the Houlton First Baptist Church, True Blue Class and the Order of the Eastern Star. Muriel was a loving and supportive mother to her sons, Dean and Lynn York. She was an excellent knitter, making many articles of clothing for her family and friends. She dearly loved her three granddaughters, Susan York, Jody (York) White and Diane York, teaching them little knitting and sewing skills and many musical songs and little ditties. She also loved and enjoyed her great-grandchildren, Casey and Gehrig White. She will always be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor. She is survived by her loving husband of 71 years, Malcolm E. York, whom she worked beside sharing all of the good years of work and family. They enjoyed each others’ company through-out the years and later in Florida and New Brunswick, Canada. Along with her husband, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she is survived by her brother, Hubert “Jake” Golding. She was predeceased by her parents; and a brother, Wendell H. Golding. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 20, at the Houlton Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Arthur Myers officiating.
