SEARSPORT – Nellie A. Howard, 90, died Saturday, Dec. 29, 2007, at Tall Pines Nursing Home, Belfast. She was born April 29, 1917, in North Searsport, a daughter of Raymond M. and Florence (Benson) Howard. Nellie was educated in local schools. Nellie had many passions in life; she loved to do crosswords, read and enjoyed keeping up with numerous family members and pen pals by writing. She would write many letters every week to her pen pals and family members. Nellie was the go-to person for all the information of the family, she kept track of family members. She especially loved the family children. She joyfully volunteered many hours of her time to KnoWalLin, making chucks for patients; she was recognized by the organization for her hours of volunteering. Nellie was a devoted neighbor. She was a member of First Congregational Church of Searsport, where she was a devoted member of Women’s Fellowship and the Roundabouts. Nellie could also be found working on most of the church suppers. In addition her parents, she was predeceased by three sisters and one brother, Winifred MacKenzie Casey, Ella Rogers, Linwood Howard and Ferne Krienke, as well as one nep-hew. Nellie is survived by two sisters and one brother, Jean-ette Clark and husband, Robert “Pete,” of Searsport, Eudora Perkins and husband, Merle, of Hampden and Vaughan Howard and wife, Norma, of Searsport, as well as many, many nieces and nephews. Family and friends will gather for visitation 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3, 2008, at Belfast United Methodist Church, 23 Mill Lane, Belfast, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. officiated by the Rev. James Barkley. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Nellie’s memory may be made to First Congregational Church of Searsport, P.O. Box 261, Searsport, ME 04974 or Belfast United Methodist Church, 23 Mill Lane, Belfast, ME 04915. Arrangements are under the direction of Young Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 31 West Main St., Searsport.
