TENANTS HARBOR – Newell “Sonny” McLain, 63, passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2007, at Pen Bay Medical Center, Rockport. Mr. McLain was born April 12, 1944, in Rockland, the son of Elizabeth and Newell McLain. He grew up on Matinicus Island, attended Tenants Harbor schools and MCI. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, he served two tours of duty in Vietnam. After nine years of active duty he joined the Army National Guard briefly, then the Air National Guard for 12 years. A lifetime lobsterman, he began fishing on Matinicus Island when he was nine years old. He loved to be on the water and fished off Little Green Island. Newell married Donna Buchanan two and a half years ago, after a long courtship. He loved woodwork, especially carpentry work, building his own living room. Newell also enjoyed bass fishing and was an avid cribbage player. Survivors include his wife, Donna McLain of Tenants Harbor; his children, Michael Barrett of Columbia, Conn., Kevin Barrett of South Thomaston, Heather McLain of Fredericks-burg, Va., three grandchildren, Ashlee Barrett of Columbia, Conn., Sean Barrett of Columbia, Conn., and Nicholas Barrett of South Thomaston; his mother, Elizabeth Ames of Tenants Harbor; his father, Newell McLain of Rockland; his aunt, Helen Hupper of Tenants Harbor; several cousins. No services will be held at Newell’s request. Memorial don-ations in Newell’s name may be made to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are entrusted to Hall & Bibber Funeral Home, 78 Main St., Thomaston.
