BANGOR – Newton D. Culver, 90, husband of the late Virginia (Maynard) Culver, died Oct. 26, 2006, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. He was born Oct. 23, 1916, in Albany, N.Y., the son of Lafayette and Olive (Newton) Culver. Newton served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a veteran of the Battle of the Bulge. He also was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a firefighter with the Minoa, N.Y., Fire Department and a charter member of the East Eddington Volunteer Fire Department and served for more than 20 years. Newton worked at the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Air Force at Dow Air Force Base, Bangor; Ernest Harmon Air Force Base, Newfoundland; and Tan Son Nhut Air Force Base, Vietnam, returning to Bangor and retiring in 1970. He was a member of the Maine Snowmobile Association, the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, life member of the National Rifle Association, and was an avid hunter. He is survived by his son and wife, Bruce Culver and Ruth of Charlotte Hall, Md.; his daughter and husband, Kathleen and Michael Gentile of Rural Hall, N.C.; six grandchildren, Ronald Bright, Lynn Beacham, Karen Angelopoulos, Deborah Engle, Richard Culver and Michelle Weiland; and nine great-grandchildren. A service of remembrance will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 30, at Clifton United Baptist with the Rev. Al Coffey, interim pastor, officiating. Interment will be held noon Tuesday, Oct. 31, at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta.
