DEDHAM – Nina M. Smith, “The Bait Lady,” 74, wife of the late Blake “Tooney” Smith Jr., died March 19, 2008, at a Bangor health care facility, after a long illness. She was born Dec. 17, 1933, in East Orland, the youngest of nine children of Herbert and Alice (Gray) Conary. Nina was known as “The Bait Lady” selling bait with her husband and after his death, continuing. She took great pride in the braided rugs she made and was awarded many blue ribbons at the Blue Hill Fair. She was a member of Riverside Chapter No. 123 OES of Orland. Nina loved her grandchildren, bowling and yardsaling with her best friends, Marjorie “Moo” Tripp and Maria Cyr. Surviving are two sons, Blake D. Smith III and his wife, Marie, Richard Y. Smith and his wife, Mary, all of Dedham; five grandchildren, Kaila, Jessica, Christina, Jennifer and J.R.; one great-grandson, Chase Morrill; a sister, Wyneta Nightengale of Florida; one brother, Marshall Conary of Bradley; several nieces and nephews. The family thanks the staff of Maine Veterans’ Home, B Unit, for their loving care of Nina. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 21, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, March 22. Spring interment will be at Central Cemetery, Dedham. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments after the service at Brookings-Smith Reception Rooms, 55 South Main St., Brewer.
