FORT FAIRFIELD – Nita J. Nickerson, 62, wife of Steven J. Nickerson, died Wednesday evening, Dec. 29, 2004, at her Fort Fairfield residence following a brief illness. She was born Sept. 12, 1942, at Upper Kent, N.B., Canada, the daughter of Earlon and Frances (Cox) Wortman. Nita’s family moved to Fort Fairfield when she was four years old and Nita attended local schools and was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School Class of 1961. She was married to Steven J. Nickerson on Nov. 20, 1971, and had been employed for 28 years by SAD No. 20, Fort Fairfield, in the hot lunch program. She was a member of the Fort Fairfield Alumni Association and attended the Celebration Center of Fort Fairfield. She was predeceased by her parents, and is survived by her husband of 33 years, Steven J. Nickerson of Fort Fairfield; one son, Scott Doughty and his wife, Denise, of Presque Isle; three daughters, Sandra Oakes and her husband, James, Sheri L. Doughty, all of Fort Fairfield, Stephanie J. Nickerson Violette of Bangor; two brothers, Charles Wortman and his wife, Linda, of Swisher, Iowa, Brian Wortman and his wife, Donna of Beechwood, N.B., Canada; two sisters, Gail Roach Rowe of Bangor, Pamela Newcomb and her husband, Peter, of Fort Fairfield; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 1, 2005, at the Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main Street, Fort Fairfield, and 1:30-2:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 2, 2005, at the Celebration Center, Houlton Road, Fort Fairfield, where funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Mark Babin officiating. A reception in Nita’s memory will be held at the Celebration Center immediately following the funeral service. Interment will take place at the Union Cemetery, Fort Fairfield later in the spring.
