BEALS – Norma Amanda Backman, 80, passed away quietly Feb. 23, 2007, in Ellsworth. She was born June 24, 1926, in Jonesport, the daughter of the late Ralph and Grace (Peabody) Wilcox. Norma spent most of her life on her beloved island of Beals. Norma was known for her love for her God, her family, her church and the beautiful Downeast. She loved music and her voice was often heard at area funerals, weddings and church events. Norma worked for several years at the Beals Elementary School. She enjoyed reminiscing and drinking coffee with her special friends at “Tall Barney’s.” She also loved scrapbooking with her granddaughter, Amanda and going on long rides with her son, Ralph and her “grandson,” Jordan, the prettiest dog in the world. Her church and her faith were of highest importance. She spent much of her adult life as a member and leader at Beals Wesleyan Church. It was her personal relationship with Christ that kept her strong these last difficult weeks. She is deeply loved, fondly remembered, and greatly missed. She was married to Herman Backman Jr. for 59 years, before his death November 2006. She was also predeceased by two sons, Linfield and Herman III; and a daughter, Kathy Ann. She is survived by her son, Ralph Backman and wife, Terry; a brother, Elmer “Herky” Wilcox and wife, Jean; daughter-in-law, Shirley Beal; son-in-law, Bud Fancy. She took great pride in her three children; 10 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. They all embraced her love of the sea and lighthouses, as she regaled them with stories of Libby Island, Matinicus Rock and Grand Manan Island. Visiting hours will be held 3-7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 25, at Beals Wesleyan Church. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26, at the church, officiated by the Rev. Bud Fancy. Interment will be after at Sewell Field Cemetery, Beals. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Kathy (Backman) Fancy Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 82, Beals, ME 04611.
