HOULTON – Norma F. Cotton, 88, died Nov. 10, 2005, at a local healthcare facility. She was born June 8, 1917, in Oakfield, the daughter of Henry H. and Sarah (Dorman) Dow. Norma was a lifelong member of the Church of the Good Shepard, Episcopal, teaching Sunday school for many, many years. She was a graduate of Houlton High School, Ricker Junior College and Stoneleigh College of New Hampshire. She worked for the Army Engineers and Rathion in Boston, Mass. After marrying David Hunter Cotton, Norma worked as his secretary at Ricker Classical Institute until the birth of their daughter. Later she worked in the alumni office at Ricker College and Fryeburg Academy. She excelled at sewing, knitting, needlepoint, upholstery and had a great interest in genealogy. She was adventurous, funny and a risk taker; Hunter often said she was the bravest woman he had ever known. Every boy who knew her had a crush on her and every girl wanted to be just like her when they grew up. She was a tomboy who was always very much a lady. Her laugh was contagious. Norma is survived by her daughter, Ellen Cotton, of North Yarmouth; her sister, Gloria Dow, of Sayville, N.Y.; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband, two brothers who were both killed during and shortly after World War II, James F. Dow for whom Dow Air Force Base in Bangor was names and Harold Dow. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Church of the Good Shepard with the Rev. Jessie Drysdale officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.
