BIRCH HARBOR – Paula Jean (Cowperthwaite) Phinney, 50, passed away June 2, 2006, surrounded by her family, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was born Sept. 28, 1955, in Bar Harbor, the daughter of the Benjamin and Avis Cowperthwaite. She worked for many years at Stinson Canning Co. Paula loved to bake and would make cakes for all types of occasions. She was very active in the community in helping to organize fundraisers to help anyone in need. Paula loved to be with her family on Jones Pond, fishing on her dad’s boat. Paula enjoyed getting together with her friends and family for BBQ’s and holidays. As her family was growing up, Paula was like a second mom to the kids in the neighborhood. She will be remembered as a loving and caring wife, mother, daughter, sister and grandmother. She is survived by her husband of 21 years, James Phinney Sr.; mother, Avis Cowpertwhaite; three sons, Benny J. “B.J.” Cowpertwhaite, James Phinney “J.J.” Jr. and special friend, Brooke, Kevin Phinney and companion, Laura Shirland; two grandchildren, Cody and Paige Phinney; brother, Lawrence Cowperthwaite and his daughter, Lacey Cowperthwaite; sister, Phyllis Bradstreet and her husband, Arvide; niece, Gail Pennartz and husband, Martin and their three children, Chad, Arvide Jr. and Ashley; niece, Christine Bragdon and husband, James and their two children, Brett and Wyatt; nephew, Malcolm Bradstreet and wife, Colleen and their three children, Erik, Keven, and Deborah; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and many special friends. She was predeceased by her father, Benjamin Cowperthwaite. Visitation will take place 6-8 p.m. Sunday, June 4, at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Milbridge. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, June 5, at the funeral home officiated by the Rev. Billy Renwick. Burial will be afterward at the Birch Harbor Cemetery.
