STEUBEN – Pauline M. Sala, 82, died April 21, 2005, at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born June 27, 1922, in Steuben, the daughter of Ralph W. Moore and Eva (Whalen) Moore. In 1943, she married 1st Lt. Joseph R. Sala, and after World War II, they raised a family in Phillips and Skowhegan. Pauline was a career elementary school teacher who taught in Athens, Skowhegan, East Madison and Vassalboro. For 15 years, she taught on Mount Desert, where she was the first Head Start teacher, later, as a fourth grade teacher at Mount Desert Elementary Pauline proudly created and implemented a prodigious unit on Maine history. Pauline was never idle and never afraid to take charge. During her summer school breaks, she labored as a waitress, home companion, cook, household stewart and tour guide. Pauline was a life-long and active member of the Maine Education Association as well as the MEA-Retired Teachers. In recent years, she especially enjoyed her association with her “Red Hat Club” friends in Ellsworth. During most of her life, Pauline loved skiing at Sugarloaf and every type of dancing. She and her late husband once “crashed” a high society hotel party by climbing up to an outside balcony and “dancing” into the ballroom. She also was a frequent dance student in many Ellsworth Adult Ed. classes. She is surviving by her four children, Joseph Sala and his wife, Blair, of Ellsworth, Martha Sala of Centreville, Va., Peter Sala of Carrabassett Valley and John Sala and his wife, Shelley, also of Carrabassett Valley; her 11 grandchildren include: Thomas Dodge, Paul Sala, Davia (Dodge) Shair, Julie (Sala) Roach, Adam Sala, Megan Sala, Natasha Sala, Casey Taylor, Ashley Taylor, Aimee Sala, and Alice Sala. She also has six great-grandchildren, Jennifer and Joey Sala, Finn and Cameron Roach, Christopher Dodge and Karysa Shair. Visiting hours will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, April 24, at the Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge, where funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Monday, April 25.
