DANFORTH – Payson L. Estabrook 88, beloved husband of M. Louise (Robinson) Estabrook passed away peacefully Dec. 31, 2005, in Houlton, from a severe head injury he sustained in a vehicle accident on Thanksgiving Day. He was born Jan. 23, 1917, in Danforth, the son of Ray and Marion (White) Estabrook. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years; and his four devoted daughters and sons-in-law, Juanita and Carl Crone Sr. of Danforth, Maxine and Mike Todd of Hodgdon, Eileen and Ron Richard of Springfield, Mass. and Christine and Randy Amero of Weston; one half-brother, Ray Estabrook Jr. and his wife, Betty, of West Bath; 16 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild on the way, several nieces and nephews, and a special cousin, Nadine (White) Day of Danforth. He was predeceased by a brother, Wayne; a sister, Maxine Moffit; and a stepbrother, Holman Petroff. At the beginning of World War II, he worked as a welder at the Bath Iron Works and then served his country, in the U.S. Army, for the duration of the war. He was a life member of the Rex L. McKenney Post No. 45 of Danforth. After his discharge, he was a dairy farmer for five years before returning to Danforth, where he worked for the Maine Department of Transportation until his retirement. Payson loved the outdoors and with his wife, spent his retirement years ice fishing, enjoying their trout stocked ponds, feeding the birds, mowing his lawn, that grew larger with each passing year, and gardening – sharing his vegetables and donating his multiplying canna bulbs with those who loved flowers. At their request, a graveside service will be held when his wife joins him. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Madigan Estates for their unending care and compassion during his final days. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Danforth Playground Fund, care of April Crone, 209 Calais Rd, Danforth, ME 04424.
