EASTBROOK – Penelope “Penny” Diane White, 65, passed peacefully May 29, 2008, surrounded by family and friends at Mount Desert Island Hospital. She was born Oct. 26, 1942, in Sullivan. Penny was a mother first and foremost, as well as a loving and caring sister. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. After raising her family she started her career and ultimately retired from the Maine Department of Labor in 2000. She enjoyed gardening and the beauty of her flowers. Penny and Blacky loved to watch the many birds that visited their feeders and laughed at the antics of squirrels and raccoons, who invaded the feeders. Family gatherings weren’t complete without her strawberry rhubarb pie and indigestion from her homemade spaghetti sauce. Surviving Penny are her cat, Blacky; daughter, Laurie Anne White; sons, James L. White Jr. and his wife, Kathy and Eric L. White and his wife, Stacy; two sisters, Frances and Dorothy Havey; two granddaughters, Amanda Crowley and her husband, Ricky, and Hannah Carver; six grandsons, Scott Catheron, James White III, Jeramie White, William Hopkins, Kyle Carver and Colton White; three great-granddaughters, Belinda and Isabelle Catheron and Riley Crowley; many nieces, nephews, friends; and most especially her lifelong best friend, Sally Haslam. Penny was predeceased by her mother, Rosalie Havey of Sullivan; her brother, Raymond Noyes of Derry, N.H.; her very dear uncle, Clarence Ashe of Dover, N.H.; and close companion and friend, Benny Liscomb. Penny will be remembered fondly by many who knew and experienced her unconditional love, compassion, patience and generosity. A graveside service will be held 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 3, at Blaisdell Cemetery, North Sullivan, with Charles Kelley officiating. Family and friends are invited to share in a celebration of Penny’s life at the residence of Jim and Kathy White, Georges Pond Road, Franklin, directly after the service.
