BELFAST – Perley A. McNutt, 85, died July 8, 2005, at an Ellsworth healthcare facility. Born May 7, 1920, in Houlton, he was the son of John A and Catherine O’Connell McNutt. Perley had served on the school board at Sullivan Maine and the Belfast City Council for two years. He was a member and past King Lion of the Belfast Lions Club, and a past treasurer of the Belfast Curling Club. He was also a member of the Belfast Lodge No. 24 AF and AM, the ANAH Temple Shrine the Knights Templar and the American Legion. In the 1930s Perley was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) from 1939-1941. During World War II Perley served in the Navy. For 46 years Perley was an employee of Stinson Canning Company serving in various capacities including manager of the Belfast plant. He was the environmental liaison between his company and the EPA. Perley had campaigned for both Margaret Chase Smith and George Mitchell. In 1972 he authored a book entitled “What about us?” Mr. McNutt was predeceased by three brothers, John, Oral and Thomas McNutt; one sister, Evelyn Arnold. Survivors include his daughters, Sally Scott of Swanville, and Margaret Nieson of Ellsworth; five grandchildren; three great-grand-children; several nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by special nieces and nephews, Judy, Sherrie and Dave. Also special friend, Kay Cookson and family.
