EAST MACHIAS – Peter N. “Pete” Stergas, 82, went home to be with the Lord, Oct. 20, 2003. He was born Aug. 27, 1921, at Manchester, N.H., the son of Nicholas N. Stergas and Lydia Clark. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp during World War II, serving in the South Pacific from 1942-1946. He was employed at the Cutler Naval Base for 14 years as a plumber and was a plumbing inspector for several towns for 20 years. He became self-employed in sales and plumbing until he retired in 1992. Peter was a lifetime member of the D.A.V. and a member of the Ephraim Johnson American Legion Post No. 9. Peter is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth (Matteau) Stergas; one son, David W. Stergas and his wife, Mindy, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a special granddaughter, Heather Stergas of Turner; one step-daughter, Lorraine Cochrane and her husband, Willard, and family of Sussex, New Brunswick; and a cousin, Fieldon Lambert of St. John, New Brunswick. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at the Jacksonville Cemetery. Cremation arrangements by Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias.
