RALPH CLARKE WILLIAMS III STOCKTON SPRINGS – R. Clarke Williams III passed away unexpect-edly Sept. 15, 2008. “Clarke” Williams was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., in 1935, and spent most of his youth growing up in Cohasset, Mass., where he began his lifelong interest in boats, sailing and the water. He was a graduate of The Kent School, Kent, Conn., and also served with the U.S. Coast Guard in Alaska. Clarke enjoyed all types of watercraft, but he had a particular fondness for the Tall Ships and always looked forward to their frequent gatherings in Boston Harbor. A bit of a daredevil in his younger years, he piloted the Gold Cup Unlimited Hydroplane “Such Crust” in national competition during the 1960s. He was a larger than life character who enjoyed people and lived life to the fullest. Clarke and his life partner, Anne Hall, who predeceased him in 2007, came to call Stockton Springs their home in the 1990s and thoroughly enjoyed their time living on the Maine coast, taking on the many projects of home renovation and welcoming their many family members for summer visits. He is survived by his three children, Beau Williams of Rutland, Vt., Bruce Williams and his wife, Heather and their son, Sam Williams, of Grosse Pointe Park, Mich., and Diana Williams and her husband, Alex Gambal, of Beaune, France; as well as Anne Hall’s six children. A remembrance service will be held noon Saturday, Sept. 20, at Fort Point Lighthouse, Stockton Springs. In lieu of flowers, Clarke’s family asks that donations be made in Clarke’s name to Waldo County Hospital, 118 Northport Ave., Belfast, ME 04915.
