EASTON AND TOWACO, N.J. – Ressa Yvonne Edmunds died Saturday, Sept. 24, 2005, at the Morristown Memorial Hospital following complications from surgery. She was born March 18, 1921, in Easton to Roy Elmer and Avis Jane (Lamoreau) Flewelling. She attended Ladner Elementary School in Easton and graduated from Easton High School as valedictorian in 1939. Ressa attended Colby College and was accepted into the Maine Alpha Chapter of Pi Gamma Mu, National Social Science honor society. Majoring in English, she was in the graduating Class of 1943. Ressa met the love of her life, a handsome young engineer and naval officer, John Joseph Edmunds Jr. and they were married Jan. 30, 1943. While her husband was in the service, Mrs. Edmunds taught school in Easton. After the war the family lived in Old Town, for five years before moving to Towaco, N.J., where she resided until her death. While in New Jersey she attended William Patterson College in order to obtain a New Jersey teaching credential; then teaching and substituting for several years at local schools. Mrs. Edmund’s primary joy came from raising and caring for her family. When the kids were young she volunteered at the Methodist Church in Montville where she was a member for 40 years. She also was den mother for the Cub Scouts. Daughter, Dee sums up Mom’s life, “Mom had a teaching degree in English, but she could teach just about anything. When I was in elementary and middle school, she did a lot of substitute teaching at the Towaco Annex, Cedar Hill and Central Lazar Middle School. When she taught at my school, I remember that I couldn’t wait to go to school that day because she would be there, too. She was soft spoken, but firm and the kids enjoyed having her teach their class. At home she was also a dedicated mom. Besides teaching me how to play the piano, sew my own clothes and help me with homework every night, she would also cook up fabulous homemade meals that could top any restaurant. She was definitely a super mom.” She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, John of Towaco; a son, John Edmunds III wife, Ana Maria; grandson, John Edmunds IV; daughter, Karla husband, Eugene, Christensen of Jordan, Montana; grandchildren, Jana, Eric and Chance; daughter, Dee Edmunds of Waikola, Hawaii; grandchildren Chelsea and Jonathan Himalaya; a sister Amy LaChapelle of Augusta; many nieces and nephews and many, many dear friends. A private memorial ceremony is planned for family and friends. Ressa Edmund’s favorite charity was the American Heart Association.
