FREEPORT – Rev. Charles T. Brown, 92, a resident of Freeport, died Sunday, March 13, 2005, at Hawthorne House where he had resided for the past year. A native of Stockbridge, Mass., he was born Nov. 21, 1912, the son of Willie Comstock Brown and Edith Janes Brown. He was ordained on June 17, 1941, at the Congregational Church in Housatonic, Mass. Before retiring at the age of 87, Rev. Brown served in the pulpit at a number of churches during a span of more than 60 years. During his career, he served as a minister in churches in Portage, Woolwich, Monmouth, Bucksport, Stockbridge, Mass., Thorndike, Searsport and Sandy Point. Rev. Brown, a graduate of Williams High School in Stockbridge, Mass. was a graduate of the Bangor Theological Seminary and a 1940 graduate of Bowdoin College. In 1943 to 1945 he served as chaplain in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II stationed at bases in Arizona, New Mexico and South Dakota. Rev. Brown also was a founder and first president of the Bucksport Historical Society; an honorary life member of Sandy Point American Legion and a former member of the Monmouth Grange. For many years he served in various capacities as an officer for the Waldo-Hancock Ministers Association. He enjoyed writing religious articles and bird related stories. In his retirement years, being interested in the environment, he enjoyed organic gardening and raising chickens. He was also interested in trains and trolleys. An avid bird watcher, Rev. Brown wrote a column “Seen Through the Binoculars” for the Bucksport Free Press for many years. Rev. Brown is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary (Flanders) Brown of Freeport; a sister and her husband, Elizabeth and Ellis Butler of Oneida, Tenn.; sisters-in-law, Miss Eleanor Flanders and Mrs. Mildred Flanders, both of Monmouth and Mrs. Christine Brown of Pittsfield, Mass.; a son, Rev. Kendall Brown and his wife, Cheryl, of Evansville, Ind.; daughters, Sharon Brown of Brunswick and Deborah Betit and her husband, Paul, of Brunswick; a granddaughter, Hannah Brown of Berkeley, Calif.; grandsons, Charles J. Betit and his wife, Laura, of Brunswick, and Christopher Betit of Brunswick; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Perry C. Brown in 1968; and a brother-in-law, Earle Flanders. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, at the Monmouth United Methodist Church, Main Street, Monmouth. Visiting hours Wednesday 7-9 p.m. at Bragdon-Finley Funeral Home, 707 Main St., Monmouth. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Rev.
