MILTON, Fla., and LUBEC MKC Richard Arnold Williams, “Willie,” retired, 1941-2008, passed away May 20, 2008, surrounded by his loving family at home, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 23, 1941, in Los Banos, Calif., the youngest son of the late Lawrence and Irene Bennett Williams. He attended Los Banos, Calif., area schools and graduated from Fresno Junior College. He joined the U.S. Coast Guard in Alameda, Calif., in 1962 and served aboard the USCGC Barataria in Portland, 1963-1966. He went on to serve on several Coast Guard Cutters, Towline, 74-76; Duane, 78-80, and Evergreen, 82-85; and several land stations, Manana Fog Station, Maine, 72-74; LORSTA, Estartit, Spain, 76-78; U.S. Coast Guard Academy, New London, Conn.; and RIO, Bath, before retiring in 1988. After his retirement he worked for Moral, Welfare and Recreation at the Newport Naval Base, Newport, R.I., and at Cutler Naval Station, Cutler. He was a member of American Legion, Stuart Green Post 65, Lubec; Milton Amateur Radio Club, Milton, Fla.; Amateur Radio Association; Retired Enlisted Association; and U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association. He is survived by his wife, Vicki of Milton, Fla.; daughter, Rebecca and husband, Timothy McGuinness, of Pleasantville, N.Y.; son, Richard and wife, Elizabeth, of Milton, Fla.; granddaughter, Colleen Hanna McGuinness and much loved Jennifer Greene of Tiverton, R.I.; a brother, Thomas Williams and wife, Judith, of Reno, Nev.; father-in-law, Albert Scoville of Lubec; sister-in-law, Shirley and husband, William Campbell, of Westbrook; brother-in-law, Douglas Denbow and wife, Mona, of Lubec; sister-in-law, Deborah Walsh of Bourne, Mass.; several nieces and nephews. There will be a graveside memorial service for family and friends 3 p.m. July 3 in Lubec. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Willie’s name may be made to Whiting Community Food Pantry, care of Bill Sawtelle, 340 U.S. Route 1, Dennysville, ME 04628. Arrangements are in the care of McClure Family Funeral Services, Lubec.
